Our Philosophy

Our Philosophy

Think of your leaders and managers as those responsible for flying a diverse group of employee kites – “Leadership Kite Flyers.” On the surface, legal requirements and restrictions set the boundaries within which Leadership Kite Fliers can run, and basic principles of management serve as the “how to” starting point for this Kite flying experience. A balanced approach when applying HR best practices also provides the finesse necessary to motivate a team to reach its potential. When you are successful, the Kites are successful; when the Kites are successful, you are successful.

The height of each Employee Kite is determined by employee engagement, job satisfaction and productivity. Positive business outcomes occur when Employee Kites find their rhythm and fly well, even in the face of challenges and obstacles. Corporate culture determines whether the Leadership Kite Fliers have the training, tools and resources to fly Employee Kites at optimum levels. It also directly impacts the height at which Employee Kites fly.

The art of Organizational Kite Flying takes patience, commitment and training. We believe our range of services can help your organization control flying conditions and develop effective Leadership Kite Fliers. Every day is a great day to fly at Red Kite. Are you ready to LEARN TO FLY? Let’s get started!

Our Founder

Our Founder

jennifer-bouman-steagallRed Kite founder Jennifer Bouman-Steagall is engaging, dynamic, compelling, entertaining, and genuinely passionate about her work, or so people say (see our Testimonials). She also happens to be a highly skilled management-side employment litigation attorney with over 19 years of experience representing Oregon and Washington employers.

In 2010 Jennifer left law firm life to open a solo private practice called Employment Law Outsourcing (ELO). ELO is the formal legal defense side of Jennifer’s practice and continues to be the name under which Jennifer represents clients in legal matters filed at the agency level and in state and federal court.

Over the next 3 years ELO grew into more than an employment law practice; it became a better business practice. To give the prevention-focused, organizational development side of her practice its own voice, Jennifer launched Red Kite as a d.b.a. of ELO in 2013. It doesn’t take long to see Jennifer’s passion for training and her commitment to helping businesses grow and succeed.

Our Name

This is a story about how six kites changed the course of our business. One perfect summer day in June, I drove to the Oregon coast hoping to find some clarity about the direction of my solo law practice, ELO. Up until that point, I had tried my best to conform to more traditional notions of what society expects from attorneys. I was successful, and I wasn’t very happy.

It was time for an Oregonian walkabout to evaluate where I was, where I wanted to be, and what I was willing to do to change. I came upon a small stretch of beach and noticed something I had not seen before – 6 enormous, beautiful kites flying proudly in the warm summer breeze. I hadn’t flown a kite for over 25 years, and I had never seen kites this large before. The site of these 6 kites took my breath away.

I was so moved by the site of the kites that I pulled over to watch them dance on the wind. They appeared to be living their purpose, and the people flying the kites seemed equally at ease with the flier’s success tied to that of the kite, and kite’s success tied to that of the flier.

The interaction between the kites and their fliers reminded me in many ways of the relationship between managers and employees and the impact corporate culture can have on the success of that relationship. In that perfect moment our kite flying philosophy and name took flight, and our path changed forever.

The name Red Kite represents the energy, vitality, creativity, and enterprising spirit that embody our core values and how we do business. We embrace change and thrive when we live our purpose of helping businesses grow and succeed. At Red Kite, every day is a great day to fly!
